Yep! But if you can afford a Carrerea GT, chances are a $9350 service isn’t gonna hurt the budget too badly.

Actually, they were only $17, $219, and $298. The first listed price is the normal rate per item, the second listed price is the rate you actually paid per item, and the third rate is the total that you paid for that item. They give you a break on each item when you do a major service.

A buddy of mine used to have a Carrera GT, but he got rid of it because the driveshaft snapped twice. Porsche covered it the first time, but not the second time. Apparently, it was more cost effective for him to buy a brand new Scuderia instead of keeping ze German beauty.

Don’t snap the driveshaft; your expensive repair bills will get expensiver.

Kinja'd!!!0

Wow. I’ve honestly never heard of a CGT having that issue. Was he doing burnouts with it or increase its horsepower output? That doesn’t seem like a part that would snap under normal driving situations.

(Note- When you say “driveshaft”, I assume you’re referring to what I know of as the “halfshaft”, which is the rod-like part that transmits power from the differential to the wheels.)

As for it being more cost effective to switch to the Scud, that doesn’t surprise me at all. Ferrari has come such a long way in terms of reliability since when I was younger and much wiser. In fact, I know friends who only budget around $2k for the upkeep of their modern Ferraris.

Haha that’s a good think to keep in mind!

Speaking of ridiculous prices, I recently changed the pads on my newest Porsche and the bill came to over $5k. Why? Because mine has the Weissach Package which means the back plate of the brake pads is made of titanium instead of steel like the standard model. It allegedly saves about 4 lbs., so I guess that counts for something.

Nice of them to give a break on the oil price, at least. Good thing they followed the shop Manuel for the clutch check, but I’m curious about the aftermarket suspension and overrev count. I’d imagine that’s easy to do with so little inertia.

Kinja'd!!! PatBateman > CAcoalminer
09/14/2016 at 10:00

Kinja'd!!!0

Yes yes, the half shaft. The first time, it popped while he was driving around the neighborhood no faster than the speed limit. The second time was on a track “at speed”. Got rid of that, got a Scuderia. Now he has a 458 (and a new CTS-V as his daily).

As far as I understand, he’s never had any major problems with his Ferraris. Well, none that aren’t from him regularly flogging them on the track.

Four pounds? Is that per wheel, or per car? I'm sure it's for the whole car... Porsche would make a CF license plate holder and charge $2k for it. lol

Kinja'd!!! CAcoalminer > RallyWrench

Kinja'd!!!0

The “after market” suspension they make mention of is a hydraulic KW unit that allows both the front and rear of the vehicle to be lifted up in order to navigate high points in the road. A quite useful feature for those that drive their vehicles regularly.

As for the overrev count, yes, the lack of inertia makes adjusting to the correct shift points a bit more difficult that most vehicles.

Kinja'd!!! CAcoalminer > PatBateman
09/14/2016 at 12:06

Kinja'd!!!0

That’s quite strange. All I can assume is that he got a part from a bad batch or it was installed incorrectly and potentially had too much binding on it. Hard to say.

Sounds like a good duo to have and I’m glad to hear that he actually exercises his vehicles.

That makes sense.

The way I understood it, it was for the total weight of the Weissach specific pads in comparison to the regular vehicle’s pads.

Yes, Porsche’s prices are a bit silly sometimes... ok, most of the time. Haha

My friend is a speed nut. He ran track in college, is a self-made entrepreneur, owns a couple private jets, and likes fast cars. He operates all vehicles (including the ones that fly through the air and have wings) himself, and all vehicles are driven to their limits regularly. He’s a damned hoot.

Thanks. Yeah you know how it is too. When you own your own business or are a business exec you have no control over workload. If something big changes you have to suck it up and work extra until things get settled. We made a change at a key management position and I had to take on that role until we had the right opportunity to replace that VP. And that took a while. Once we made that change it took a while to get caught up after having so much time where I was wearing too many hats.

I probably still can’t be on as much as before but I will definitely be checking your posts for updates and asking you questions about your super cars!

I wish. It was one of the first exotics I considered back in 2012. I would have had to take a loss on my house to buy it.

It would have been worth it. The loss I would have taken would have been made up for because the CGT has at least doubled since then.

Well, I guess a lot of stuff was cheap a decade ago :(

That’s crazy, my local dealership doesn’t even have an M4 or anything in the showroom. Last time I drove by, I just made out a 5 series and an X1 or something.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Leadbull
09/20/2016 at 17:59

Yeah true :(

But hopefully the next time the economy tanks (and we know that will be SOONish) we won’t starve and we can buy cars for cheap.

The last time I checked there were some M4s around me. But the only Manuél ones were rare and normally in the convertible. Weird.

I have to believe that the classic car bubble is going to pop at some point. I mean, this can’t continue, right?

There’s only so many rich people, and the cost of living vs. wage imbalance is growing for most everyone else.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Leadbull
09/21/2016 at 21:03

Kinja'd!!!0

Oh yeah it will for sure. It can’t continue indefinitely.

One of the main reasons it has gone up so much is because interest rates are so low so people with a ton of cash who like cars would rather buy a car than leave the money in a money market account.

Eventually the bubble will burst, just like all bubbles...

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Leadbull

Kinja'd!!!0

Based on what I’ve read so far the global economy will start trending downwards sometime between November 8th 2016 and the end of 2017.

What I don’t know is if it will be a slow fall, medium fall or violent crash.

A bunch of leading indicators are already bad. Trump winning might spook people and make things worse. A big company going belly up like Bear Stearns did could happen at any time and cause a chain reaction. Also German’s elections are next year and the result of those elections could determine the fate of the EU. And finally China is due for a recession and has been trying to avoid it for as long as possible but eventually it will happen.

Here in So Cal a ton of people are already freaking out and selling their houses to rent for a while and see what happens. Nobody is confident that these crazy high real estate prices will last.

One the one hand, I hope that doesn’t affect your business *too* badly. I know you’ve been working like hell, so it’d be a shame if the global economy pissed all that away.

On the other hand, cheap cars.

09/23/2016 at 02:20

Kinja'd!!!0

Thanks man. I feel bad for you too because I know job opportunities are already not great and then a recession will make it worse.

I honestly can’t predict how it will affect my line of business. Prices tanked in our industry when the last recession happened and never really recovered. And costs have gone up a lot. So I don’t know what will happen if there is downword pricing pressure again.
